Beck Anxiety Inventory

Beck Anxiety Inventory is a self-test of 21 questions used to establish how much anxiety you may be suffering. Do the test and see how serious is your anxiety.

These questions, presented in a multiple choice format, was invented by Aaron Beck. Beck is a psychiatrist and generally thought of as the father of cognitive based therapy

The test was devised to help psychiatrist tell the difference between patients with depression and patients with anxiety.

Warning: The beck Anxiety Inventory should not be taken as a diagnostic tool. It should be used to measure the intensity of anxiety attack symptoms. Further tests should be done by a medical professional to confirm the diagnosis of depression or anxiety.

How does the test work?

The Beck Anxiety inventory is made up of 21 questions. Each question has four different responses, and each response scores from 0 – 3.

The test is divided into two sections. The first 13 questions measure the psychological symptoms of anxiety. The remainder assess the physical symptoms of anxiety.

When the exam is completed, each answer is assigned a score and then added up. It is better for a clinician to interpret the results and assess your condition.

What symptoms are measured?

The Beck Anxiety Inventory measures the common signs of depression and anxiety.

These include:

  • Feeling of sadness and hopelessness
  • Suicidal thoughts
  • Views on past failures
  • Crying 
  • Feeling of guilt or self-dislike
  • Loss of energy
  • Feeling of worthless
  • Lack of interest in certain activities
  • Insomnia
  • Irritability

Who can do the test?

If you are 13 years or older, you can take the Becks Anxiety Inventory.

How does the test work?

The test is made up of 21 questions. Each questions consists of 4 responses for you to choose from. Each response has a score from 0 – 3.

When the test is completed, each answer is assigned a score, and then added up.

The first 13 questions  measure psychological symptoms of anxiety, and the rest assess the physical signs of depression.

Firstly, do not worry!

There are ways to successfully manage both depression and anxiety. By maintaining a positive attitude, you can lift your mood and reduce signs of depression.

Beck Anxiety Inventory

The test has a maximum of 63 points:

  •  0-7:       minimal level of anxiety

  •  8-15:    mild anxiety

  •  16-25:  moderate anxiety

  •  26-63:  severe anxiety

Note: women with anxiety disorders tend to score 4 points higher than men with anxiety disorders.

The following includes the list of symptoms of anxiety in the Beck Anxiety Inventory. Each question has 4 possible answer:

Review each question and choose one of the answers

  • 0 = not at all
  • 1 = mildly
  • 2 = moderately
  • 3 = severely

Do you ever experience:

  1. Feeling hot
  2. Muscle tingling or numbness
  3. Dizzy or lightheaded
  4. Unable to relax
  5. Heart racing or pounding
  6. Feeling unsteady
  7. Wobbly legs
  8. Nervousness
  9. Terror or fear
  10. Indigestion
  11. Feeling scared
  12. Flushed face
  13. Feeling faint
  14. Cold or hot sweats
  15. Hands trembling
  16. Fear of Dying
  17. Afraid of losing control
  18. Unsteadiness
  19. Fearing that the worst will happen
  20. Having trouble breathing
  21. Choking feeling

Once you have scored your symptoms on a scale from 0 -3, add the scores together.

Interpreting the score

0 – 7

This reflects a low anxiety level. This may be a positive score, as long as you are not in denial of your anxiety levels. Make sure that you have not detached yourself from your real world and all that goes on in it.

8 – 21

Your score indicates a mild anxiety level. This might be a sign that you need to include relaxation techniques in your day to day life.

More than 22

You have very high anxiety levels.
